In September, approximately 80 Chatham County colleagues and community members took part in the Missouri Community Action Network Poverty Simulation, which allowed them to step into the shoes of the approximately 12% of Chatham County residents who are living in poverty as of 2021. That’s over 9,000 of our friends, neighbors, coworkers and community members who struggle to make ends meet.

On Wednesday, November 15th, CCDSS will host the Community Action Network’s Poverty Simulation, a learning tool created as a way to help people understand the realities of poverty. During this facilitated, immersive experience, participants live the lives of families at the bottom rung of the economic ladder. Each family unit will have the stressful task of providing basic necessities and shelter on a limited budget during the course of four 15-minute “weeks” while interacting with community agencies and addressing various barriers. The simulation enables participants to look at poverty from a variety of angles, as well as recognize and discuss the potential for positive change within the local community.

The simulation will be held from 9:15am to 12:30 pm at the Chatham County Agricultural and Conference Center located at 1192 US-64 Business, Pittsboro, NC.  Participate in the event to get a glimpse at the structural barriers, as well as the personal and emotional repercussions that people in poverty face.

Please register here by the end of the day on Friday, November 10. Your RSVP and subsequent attendance are very important for planning purposes.
